HOW TO DEFINE YOUR (interior design) STYLE!

Rebecca Arbuckle • February 18, 2024

YOU HAD ME AT HELLO! We all have seen and love Jerry Maguire, right!? When Tom Cruise walks in and confesses to Renee Zellweger why he needs her in his life and he goes through his speech only for Zellweger to exclaim - “you had me at hello”. Well, design in many ways is like that too! We find something that resonates with us, and we are just… well, smitten. This post will be to talk about that zing or spark we get when we find that special someone… or errrmm… something.

So many people/clients struggle with defining their style. As designers, we see it often when we talk to you - the client - about what you like, LOVE, and what you can’t live without. But surprisingly… you may not know. And that’s okay too. It’s our job, as designers, to be like mini investigators. We pick up on so many Q’s in your home, your fashion style, and maybe it’s even in how you live. Maybe you didn’t realize you couldn’t live another day without a full-on coffee bar in your newly renovated kitchen. But we knew because of your schedule, your lifestyle,… and well… maybe everytime we see you, you have a venti something or other in your hand. Or if you’re me, a Sunnyvale Latte from Hope Coffee.

Inspiration can come in so many forms. If you’re thinking about redoing a space in your home, whether it’s the kitchen or master bedroom, start paying attention to why you gravitate to the same things:

  • Fashion plays a big role - the color of your blouse or button down shirts - when you walk in your closet, do you see a rainbow of color, or is it neutrals - do you like lots of tailored pieces or do you tend towards more comfort driven items?!

  • Home is where the heart is - around your house, do you have lots of similar texture pillows - in the dishes you’ve bought that are in your cabinet, are they all white, or do they have splashes of color?

  • Pinterest, HGTV, and magazines - does your jaw drops cause Tom Cruise walks in… I mean… a beautiful room blows you away, take note. There is a reason why. It might not be your favorite paint color and not everyone is going to want green walls, BUT maybe it’s the pattern mixture - or it’s Mid-Century Modern furniture - or the rug reminds you of something in your grandmother’s house when you were 12 years old. It doesn’t matter the reason… it only matters because you love it!

  • Your own personal interests - are you a vinyl snob - do you lean into really cool sci-fi movies - do you love architecture - seems insignificant, but maybe there are clues that could relate to interior design. Vinyl might mean you like your interior a little more retro (possibly) or if you’re into sci-fi, maybe you wouldn’t be opposed to a splash of color. Let’s say you love modern architecture…. it might transcend into your home.. where you like everything clean and simple.

As designers - these notes are extremely helpful. Grab a pen and paper…. or just pin them on your Pinterest - but find a way to dog ear these moments, so when you do get to that point in your life where you are ready to invest in the perfect space for your family, you have a treasure trove of goodies we get to go through with you. When we get to tell you, “you had me at hello”.
